CHATO MATCHA & BAKERY is a cozy café tucked into a quiet corner of Aoi Ward, Shizuoka, serving a carefully curated selection of matcha-based drinks and desserts that showcase the region's rich tea culture. As a spot that blends a café, bakery, and tea store, it offers more than just a quick caffeine fix — it’s a place where visitors can slow down and savor Shizuoka’s renowned green tea in a relaxed setting.

The atmosphere here feels intimate and comfortable, with friendly staff who make an effort to engage, including those who can assist English speakers — a thoughtful detail for travelers navigating the area. Inside, the café’s ambiance supports both casual meetups and moments of quiet reflection, making it a peaceful retreat from nearby Shizuoka’s bustle, especially close to Shin-Shizuoka Station.

Matcha enthusiasts will find much to explore on the menu. Highlights include rich, raw matcha cheesecake paired with house-made soy milk ice cream, perfect for those who enjoy traditional flavors with a modern twist. The matcha lattes, available with soy or milk (regular or iced), carry a strong, authentic taste that reflects the quality of locally sourced Shizuoka tea leaves. For a touch of innovation, the nitro matcha cocktail and hojicha latte topped with cacao nibs introduce subtle layers of flavor that pleasantly surprise the palate. Those seeking lighter or plant-based options can also try the macrobiotic sandwiches, providing a balanced savory contrast to the sweets.

Locals and visitors alike tend to visit during mid-morning or afternoon hours — times when the café isn’t overly busy, allowing for a leisurely experience. The option for takeout is convenient for those passing through, but staying to sip on a matcha soy latte or an iced matcha affogato inside gives the full experience of the café’s calm vibe and thoughtful presentation.

For anyone interested in exploring local tea culture beyond a standard café visit, CHATO MATCHA & BAKERY offers an accessible and authentic taste of Shizuoka’s tea tradition, paired with simple but refined desserts. It’s best suited for those who appreciate a quieter setting where the tea itself is the centerpiece, accompanied by attentive service and a sense of place rooted in local tea craftsmanship.

Very cozy coffee shop. The iced matcha latte is very strong and delicious. The people working here are super sweet as well. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely worth a visit. They do take out as well but I suggest sitting down and relaxing while sipping on some matcha.
